Storing weed: how to keep your weed fresh longer

Storing weed in a glass jar

You have some beautiful buds at home, and naturally, you want them to stay fresh and potent. Storing weed properly makes all the difference: if you store it incorrectly, your weed loses flavor, aroma, and potency. In this article, you will learn the best way to store weed, how long it stays good, and which mistakes you should avoid.

Why proper storage is so important

Weed is a natural product that ages slowly. Light, air, heat, and moisture break down the active ingredients and aromas. As a result, your weed becomes drier, less fragrant, and eventually less potent. Storing weed properly significantly slows down that process.

The trick is to shield your weed as much as possible from exactly those four enemies. If you do that, a strain remains tasty and usable for months, instead of wasting out after just a few weeks.

The ideal storage place

Store your weed in a cool, dark, and airtight place. A cupboard or drawer at room temperature, away from the heater and the window, works fine. Avoid places where it gets warm or humid, such as above the stove or in the bathroom.

Direct sunlight is the biggest culprit, because UV light breaks down the active ingredients the fastest. A dark place is therefore more important than a very cold place.

The best preservative

An airtight glass jar is the classic, and for good reason. Glass does not absorb odors, seals tightly, and does not let air through. Do not fill the jar all the way to the rim, but do not leave too much air inside either.

Plastic bags and tins are less suitable. Plastic can become static and attract the resin crystals, and it often does not seal airtight properly. It is acceptable for the short term, but for longer storage, glass is better.

Pay attention to the humidity

Storing it too dry makes your weed brittle and crumbly, while storing it too humid increases the risk of mold. The ideal humidity is somewhere between 55 and 62 percent.

If you want to be precise, you can place a small moisture regulator in the pot to keep the moisture level in check. However, for most people, a good airtight pot in a dark place is more than sufficient.

How long does weed stay good?

When stored properly, weed remains of excellent quality for at least six months to a year. After that, the potency slowly declines, but it doesn't become dangerous just like that. If stored improperly, that same weed can noticeably lose its potency after just a few weeks.

Does your weed smell musty or do you see white, fluffy spots? Then it might contain mold, and you'd better throw it away. In that case, trust your nose and your eyes.

Does this also apply to hash?

Hash is also best stored in a cool, dark, and airtight place. Because hash is more concentrated and compact, it dries out less quickly than loose buds, but the same rules apply. Read more about the different types of hash if you want to know what you have.

Always keep both weed and hash out of reach of children and pets, and store it in a place where others cannot easily get to it.

Common storage mistakes

The biggest mistake is leaving weed lying around in a clear bag on the kitchen counter. Light, air, and heat then do their work in a short time. The refrigerator or freezer is also not a good idea, because temperature fluctuations actually damage the fragile resin crystals.

Keep it simple. An airtight glass jar in a dark, cool place is the best choice. This way, you get the most out of every strain you buy. If you are unsure which strain to bring home, check out the overview of weed strains or our weed shop.

Storing weed for the long term

If you want to store weed for longer than a few months, it pays to be extra careful. Choose a truly airtight jar, maintain the humidity with a humidity regulator, and place the jar completely out of the light, for example at the back of a cupboard.

Also, do not open the jar more often than necessary. Every time you open it, fresh air enters and aroma escapes. By approaching weed storage calmly and thoughtfully, your stash will remain fresh and potent for months.
