Storing weed: how to keep your weed fresh longer

Storing weed in a glass jar

You have beautiful buds at home, and of course you want them to stay fresh and potent. Properly storing weed makes the difference: if you store it incorrectly, your weed loses flavor, aroma, and potency. In this article you will read how to store weed best, how long it stays good, and which mistakes you should avoid.

Why proper storage is so important

Weed is a natural product that ages slowly. Light, air, heat and moisture break down the active compounds and aromatic substances. As a result, your weed becomes drier, less fragrant and eventually less potent. Properly storing weed significantly slows this process.

The trick is to shield your weed as much as possible from exactly those four enemies. If you do that, it will stay nice and usable for months, instead of going bad after a few weeks.

The ideal storage place

Store your weed cool, dark, and airtight. A cabinet or drawer at room temperature, away from the heater and the window, works fine. Avoid places that become warm or humid, such as above the stove or in the bathroom.

Direct sunlight is the biggest culprit, because UV light breaks down the active compounds the fastest. A dark place is therefore more important than a very cold place.

The best storage method

An airtight glass jar is the classic choice, and for good reason. Glass does not absorb odors, seals well and does not let air in. Do not fill the jar completely to the rim, but also avoid leaving too much air space.

Plastic bags and cans are less suitable. Plastic can become static and attract the resin crystals, and it often does not seal airtight. It can be used for the short term, but for longer storage glass is better.

Pay attention to humidity

Storing it too dry makes your cannabis brittle and crumbly, storing it too moist creates a risk of mold. The ideal humidity is somewhere between 55 and 62 percent.

If you want to do it precisely, you can place a small humidity regulator in the jar that keeps the moisture level balanced. For most people, a good airtight jar in a dark place is already more than sufficient.

How long does weed stay good?

When stored properly, weed remains perfectly good in quality for at least six months to a year. After that, the potency slowly declines, but it does not become dangerous just like that. Improper storage can cause the same weed to noticeably degrade after just a few weeks.

Does your weed smell musty or do you see white, fluffy spots? Then there may be mold in it and you should discard it. In that case, trust your nose and your eyes.

Does this also apply to hash?

You also store hash best cool, dark and airtight. Because hash is more concentrated and compact, it dries out less quickly than loose buds, but the same rules apply. Read more about the different hash varieties if you want to know what you have at home, or view our hash collection.

Always keep both weed and hash out of reach of children and pets, and store it in a place where others cannot easily access it.

Common storage mistakes

The biggest mistake is letting weed hang around in a transparent bag on the countertop. Light, air and heat then do their work in a short time. Also the fridge or freezer is not a good idea, because temperature fluctuations actually damage the fragile resin crystals.

Keep it simple. An airtight glass jar in a dark, cool place is the best choice. This way you get the most out of every strain you buy. Unsure which strain you want to get? Then check the overview of cannabis strains or our cannabis collection.

Storing cannabis for the long term

If you want to store weed for longer than a few months, it pays to be extra careful. Choose a truly airtight jar, keep the humidity in check with a humidity regulator, and keep the jar completely out of the light, for example in the back of a cupboard.

Do not open the jar more often than necessary. Every time you open it, fresh air enters and aroma escapes. By handling cannabis storage calmly and thoughtfully, your supply stays fresh and potent for months.
